Abstract/Notes | This book tells the story of two regional peace support operations- Operation BIG TALK and Operation LAGOON-conducted in Bougainville, the north Solomons Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG) in 1990 and 1994. Both these operations are today largely forgotten as their story lies only in a handful of scattered archival files, some minor publications, and in the fading memories of the individual participants. These operations though short were unique. they demonstrated the true essence of a regional cooperative spirit, and occurred in the absence of any comparative models. While operation BIG TALK was conducted uniliterally by New Zealand, this was not the case with operation LAGOON, which was the regions first coalition deployment. Here Australia led a south pacific peace keeping force (SPPKF) the visible face of which was soldiers from Tonga Vanuatu and Fiji. Cultural divides had to be brodged resulting in the strenghening of old friendships and the development of new understandings bteween the men and women of these disparate cultures who were of these operations united in tasks by a common interest-the pursuit of peace. operation LAGOON became a model for future regional coalitions and provided all participants with an enlightened appreciation of the complexities of modern peacekeeping. |
